One of our biggest pet peeves is the addition of a "fuel charge" on many of our deliveries. This really annoys us. It started several years ago, when gasoline prices first began their upward spiral; and now, 5 or more years later, they are still adding on a "fuel charge". It can be anywhere from $2.00 to $5.00 per delivery. One company lists it as a "Delivery Charge": but can you get the product you need from them without them delivering it? Of course not. And mind you, every single customer who is receiving a delivery that day gets charged that fuel charge. What we can't figure out is why don't they just include it in the price of goods sold? Isn't it a cost of doing business? Can you imagine if we put a little surcharge on each dinner entree - $1.00 gas charge, $.50 electricity charge. I don't think that would go over so big, yet our bills for energy fluctuate each month just like everyone else's. The latest "surcharge" was on the bill for the (mandated) fire suppression system inspection - that bill included a "vehicle charge" of $8.00!!! What??!
And you know, the ones who don't charge this additional fee (and probably need to the most) are the local deliveries we get, like from Village Bakery and Redman Farms. They pay the same price for gas as the big guys, but they either eat the cost of the fuel, or, do the smart thing, and simply include it in the price of their products.
Don't even let me get started on Verizon - you don't need to know about the charge we got for not using enough long distance service on the Home Phone, service we hadn't even signed up for...and then, when I got the charge removed, there was a charge for having the service - which we didn't even know we had - removed! Doesn't this just drive you to drink way too much wine at the end of the day?
