This photo - direct from the New York Times today - is part of an article about the raising (and eating) of Heritage Turkeys. There's a great slide show with more pictures here, and links where you can purchase said birds. In years past we've been able to snag a few heirloom birds from Robin Way of Rumbleway Farm near Rising Sun. Alas, she is sold out for this year, so you may have to go to Springfield Farms and see what they have to offer. Otherwise, you can always check out D'Artagnan, where the prices may scare you away but they products are very fine.
And while we really enjoyed the tasty bird from Rumbleway the past few years at Thanksgiving - and her chickens are even better! - the best turkey buying times were the few years we were on the list at the Neff's turkey farm, near Rolph's Wharf in Chestertown, where the day before we would all converge in the big tractor barn that had been transformed into a turkey pick-up barn. It was a very jolly scene, with Donna finding your turkey for you, all the deer antlers hanging on the barn walls, and tables filled with various sized birds, ready for the Thanksgiving oven.
