HighLights of New York

We spent a week in NYC during our vacation, as many of you know, and it was a whirl-wind of eating, drinking, and walking (although apparently not quite enough walking, since I gained 4 or 5 pounds...) We covered pretty much the extremes of New York dining, although not as high-end as Per Se, and we didn't get any cart food this year - not even the Mud Truck, although we were tempted plenty of times. We picked up a few ideas, but mostly I think we learned more about what we won't be doing...such as:
  • We won't be re-folding your napkin for you after you rise from your seat to go the rest room.
  • We won't be serving any 30 or 60 dollar entrees. Or 18 dollar cocktails.
  • No foam either, I don't think.
  • If you tell us your ($45) steak is over-done, we won't argue with you and tell you that the light makes it look more done than it actually is.
  • We will treat all customers equally, even if you look like a Rube from Kent County.
Some highlights? Lunch in the Delegates Dining Room at the United Nations was certainly one - a fairly mediocre meal but surrounded by a multitude of languages and costumes, with a view of the East River, not too bad. Others would have to include the Pear Cosmopolitan at Bar Bouloud; seeing the Unicorn Tapestries at the Cloisters; the duck two ways at Restaurant Daniel, where we celebrated our 3rd or 12th wedding anniversary; the pork belly saam at Momofuku Saam Bar; walking over the Brooklyn Bridge; Economy Candy; a late dinner at Pongsri Thai - the duck with noodles especially tasty; dim sum at Jing Fong; shopping for exoctic food stuffs at Kaluystans and Kam Man; a branch of Amy's Bread being right around the corner from our hotel; and our entire evening (our last as well) at A Voce... I guess I better stop while I'm ahead...

We'll share more with you later, I am certain. Meanwhile, my desk here at the office beckons, even as memories of a wonderful week in one of the most exciting restaurant cities of the world linger.
