Frankfurters for Dinner

Last night we had our quintessential summer dinner, on the porch at dusk. Hot dogs and pasta salad with fresh tomatoes, nectarine crisp for dessert. The crisp - with Godfrey's fresh nectarines - was absolutely wonderful, but it was those dogs that really won best in show. I'm sorry I've got no pictures to share, it would be making your mouth water to see them - garnished with some Gulden's mustard and Marty's Bread and Butter pickle, these dogs "snap" when you take a bite. They were the real thing - frankfurters from Binkerts outside of Baltimore. If you have never been to Binkerts, you need to stop there on your next trip West. They are easy to reach, just off the start of the Beltway from I95 (vaguely) and the aroma in the shop is worth the trip alone. One of our fish guys- Frank Mattes - is our connection; he stops there for himself and picks up ham or sausages for us too periodically. The Westphalia Ham is incredible - sweet, salty, thin slices that make for a terrific sandwich - and the variety of sausages, not to mention those frankfurters, are really, really good. I particularly favor the white sausages - weisswurst, made with veal. Oh, those are tasty. I highly reccommend a visit - and if you go, pick some up for us too!
