This and That

It was a wildly popular prix-fixe menu last night; I wish I had taken some pictures. The first course was an "open" ravioli - some would call it handkerchief pasta - with mozzarella, eggplant and tomato, followed by a most unusual entree of short ribs of beef (the meat only, mind you) stuffed into (how'd they do that?) a loaf of polenta. It was awesome, sliced into "bricks" and served with a lucious tomato sauce. It made for a very interesting presentation, with the dark, wine marinated short rib meat surrounded by the yellow square of polenta, and a very tasty supper. Dessert was more "stuffed" food - a chocolate roulade, filled with whipped cream and touched with chocolate sauce. The best thing about these menus on Wednesday nights, IMHO, is the opportunity it offers Kevin for experimentation. He can make something new and maybe even a little risky, try it out on our always adventuresome diners at a price they can afford, and perhaps come up with that new special for the menu later in the week. That is an added side affect we didn't count on when we started this promotion back during our anniversary celebration.

This Sunday is our second BTEO event. Which is - Brooks Tavern Eats Out. We are going to the Harbor House in the Worton Creek Marina. Not a big group is going - too many conflicts - but it should still be alot of fun, with the kitchen and dining room crew coming along this time. I'll be sure to post pictures next week.

We are not looking forward to the end of the summer produce. Despite the dry weather, it has been a bountiful season, with some delicious tomatoes, tons of peppers, eggplant, corn and greenbeans, and some of the best watermelon in recent memory. Now is the best time for crab though - I've heard some stories of very large, fat and heavy ones available locally for an actually realistic price. However, the truth is, our customers are only waiting for the oyster fritter to return, which will be in a month or so I assume. Oysters need to be fatter and tastier for the fritter to do them justice - just like everything else, there is a reason for the season.

These are some trying times we are all experiencing these days. I suggest avoiding the news now and then and focusing on this beautiful county we live in. The Northern Geese are coming back - we saw a small flock this morning, which is about the right timing, eh? - and a picnic at Eastern Neck Island or Sassafras Wildlife Management Area (before the shooting starts!) might be just what the doctor ordered. Take your bike on a ride to Betterton; act like a tourist and walk around Chestertown's Water Street; go on a boat ride on the Chester River; drive on the back roads between Still Pond and Worton, or Quaker Neck and Piney Neck; tour the Rock Hall Marinas or the Galena Antique Shops. Get out and about. And while you are at it, support your local dining establishments! (You knew there'd be a catch, didn't you?)

See you soon!
