Time for Apples

When I sent out the Wednesday Prix-fixe email this morning, I mentioned that we got our apples from Milburn Orchards in Elkton. I wanted to include a link to the orchard in the email, but it drags things down to such a crawl, I withdrew that idea and decided to do it in this blog post instead. Milburn's is a terrific source for all things apple, as well as berry, peach, pumpkin, you name it. On the web site they list the apples they are currently picking - but it's better to call to make sure it is up to date. We missed out on the 'Orange Honey', which certainly sound intriguing.

And, unless you have a couple of little kids you want to take to a pumpkin patch, I highly suggest avoiding the place on any Saturday or Sunday in October...it is J.A.M.M.E.D. Otherwise, it's a great road trip, and the apples are so much better than any from the grocery store.

We planted four heirloom apple trees in our yard several years ago. Three are still living, although I wouldn't say they are thriving. So far they have put out a few apples, but Ruby is the only one who has eaten any. Next year we hope to spray them with some dormant oil; maybe if we could figure out how to fight the worms we could get some fruit worth eating...
