Let the Holly Daze Begin

It's time for the annual competition for the December Dining Dollar - and this year is bound to be even more interesting than in years past. Not only do gift exchanges and office parties compete for your purse strings, but your house might be in foreclosure or your job picture bleak or your 401K decimated. It's just not your typical December in the USofA, and don't we know it. It's not the typical December anywhere, I don't think, for anyone.

We're not going to let all the gloom and doom dampen our Holiday Spirits though, if we can help it. Unless you are the place for Christmas Parties, December is not a very busy month for the a la carte restaurant trade - there's just too much else going on, both tugging at people's wallets and their time - so we don't expect to have to work too hard this month. That will give us more time to listen to Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', and debate which movie version is the best. I just watched the 1935 version, starring Seymour Hicks, and it was a pretty classic piece...some slightly basic "special effects" made it rather charming. We also need the time free to watch our absolutely favorite Christmas cartoon - the one we drove everyone crazy with last year - "Christmas Comes But Once a Year", starring Betty Boops' Grampy as Santa. It's the most wonderful thing you'll ever see, and talk about a catchy tune...I guarantee it'll be hard to get it out of your head, once you give it a listen.

We also need the time to make that Salted Nut Brittle that was such a hit last year. Plus there's the eggnog to drink - Lewes Dairy Eggnog, of course - and the peppermint ice cream to order from Kilby. We like to have plenty of time to plan our own Christmas Dinner, and of course Kevin needs all the time he can get to get ready for New Year's Eve. Reservations have already started to roll in for this special dining night, and you can believe that the menu is just about rounded out. We've ordered the cloves for the pomanders - that tradition began last year too, and it's a pretty simple way to spend quality time together, sticking cloves in oranges, eh? And of course there are always pecans to shell for Pecan Pie, which is a fine way to spend a slow night in the kitchen at Brooks Tavern, a real holiday event everyone looks forward to. You can find a silver lining to just about anything, and this time of year, just when there isn't enough time to do all of those seasonal things you like to take time for, bingo! business slows up so you can do them! Funny how it works out that way...

Let's watch that cartoon again...
