Day 17 but Who's Counting?

Today marks the 17th Day In A Row that Kevin and I have had to come in to work.

Now, that being said, and it is a true statement mind you, I did not say that we've had to work hard all of those 17 days in a row, or even work at all, really, each of those 17 days. What I said is that we've come to work - that is, come to Brooks Tavern every single day for the past 17 days. But not always to "work" at work. For instance, one day - Sunday last - we had the Silcox Family Christmas here, which was a lot of fun and absolutely no work at all. We've had to come in extra days over the New Year's Eve weekend, but I didn't have to be here long, although Kevin of course put in a few long shifts then. So, I am not actually whining here, although it may sound like it to those of you, like dairy farmers or mothers, who put in endless weeks of work; it's sort of a statement really - this is what being a business owner is all about, putting in the time at your work and you better be ready for it. However, that doesn't mean we are not looking forward to a real day off from it tomorrow - a Sunday of sleeping in, eating a late breakfast (if we have anything in the house to eat that isn't made of chocolate, that is), playing ball two or three or four times with Ruby, maybe convincing Kevin to make us a nice dinner or maybe going out somewhere if he isn't in the mood to cook (fancy that!!). No matter what, we are anticipating a recharging of batteries in order to return on Monday to catch up with the end of the year paperwork that is mounding up on our desks. And then we'll be ready to start back to the real work week on Tuesday and begin the cycle all over. Back to the usual five days, back to our relatively normal schedule again.

We've been relatively busy for the past few weeks too. It's been fun. And with the recession looming on the horizon we can only hope it continues for as long as possible. All the drivers say how slow it is everywhere, how no one is ordering anything, and we've certainly cut back as well, but it's January and expected to be slow. You just hope you can keep busy enough to pay the staff, keep the walk-in stocked and make it til the weather turns sunny and people start getting up off of their couches again. Although I don't think anything will help our Saturday lunch business except time...

Anyway, don't call us before 1o tomorrow, Mom! We'll be sleeping in!
