...everything it seems. Flour is much in the news because the price rise has been so stratospheric so fast. As a sort of interesting point, when Googling "price of flour", I came across two articles of relevance - one from 1996 and one from this week. The main difference today in the price increase would seem to be world markets and ethanol production.
Our friend Jeannie first put us on to it - hey, who looks at invoices?? - when she mentioned to us yesterday that the food company she works for has had to raise the price of flour from something like $14 a 50 pound bag in December to over $30 or something now. She was recommending to her customers that they post their menus on chalkboards so they can adjust prices accordingly!! Looking back at some of our costs for flour, I see we were paying $17.90 for a bag of King Arthur Special Flour in early November 2007 and today's delivery the price is $29.70. So yes, a substantial increase, and probably not the end of it. The issue is mostly in the bread baking, since bread is pretty much all flour, eh? This would indicate that the cost of making it has almost doubled...
Remember when we charged for the bread at the Kennedyville Inn? I guess we were way ahead of the times!!
In the same vein, our eggs just went up 25 cents a dozen...but this price rise is probably way overdue. We started buying our eggs from Mary Etta who lives near us outside of Kennedyville back in 1986 when we opened at the Ironstone. I think we paid $1.00 a dozen then. Now, it's $1.50. Twenty years, two price increases, can't complain about that. Her eggs are, as they say, priceless.
