The recently created network for Restaurant Workers of Kent County (this sounds awfully like a union, eh?) has received some interest, but not the sort I'd hoped for. Mainly, for it to function as a useful network, people need to be legitimate employees of legitimate local restaurants. I adjusted the profile questions to make this easier - mainly by making "private" the answer to the question regarding the restaurant where members work, meaning the general membership won't see it. This way, I hope, people can remain as anonymous as they wish, regarding their place of employment. The other issue is what a network like this is for. I wasn't anticipating it to be a place to bash your boss, your co-worker, your customers, but rather a place to share common issues, find a sub for a shift, find shifts, ask advice, question procedure, discuss life in the Restaurant Business as it is here in Kent County. There are plenty of places to bash and those who want that can go there. Personally, I don't need a lot of complaining in my life, I need positive direction and insight into how to make this job of mine more successful for employees and customers alike.
On another note, we are looking forward to the opening of a new Chestertown restaurant - A.F.W. Brix - downtown on High Street. Our friend Eliza Abbey is opening this Tapas/Wine Bar concept sometime next month. She is a very talented Chef with loads of energy and passion for the business, so she's off to a very good start. The menu is bound to be a welcome one for the local clientele; small plates have proven to be very popular for our customers and so I would predict that tapas - being even smaller plates - would add pleasantly to the mix. And the very thought of a "wine bar" sends me downtown, hopefully for some tasting flights of unusual wines at a reasonable price...but hey, that's just me....wine and snacks and a comfy setting...I'm there...on Sundays anyway!
