Big weekend in Chestertown - Downrigging Weekend for the Sultana, and the Artworks Studio Tour. Plus, of course, Hallowe'en. And, don't forget, my brother John's birthday. (Happy birthday, John!) It all promises to add up to plenty of stuff to do and see. Down rigging is a pretty fun event, IMHO. The "tall ships" that enter the Chestertown Harbor are quite amazing; their illumination on Friday night is worth a trip downtown for that alone. Add to that the Steam Calliope in Wilmer Park on Friday, followed by Fireworks, with Saturday being the day to go sailing on one of those classic vessels, and you've got something for everyone. The annual Artworks' Studio Tour is another interactive event, free this year, offering intimate visits with local artists and their work spaces. It's a two weekend schedule, which means if you miss a favorite this weekend, you can catch it next.
Personally, I'd love to skip out of work just to see the tall ships illuminated on Friday night, with a quick stop to hear the Calliope in Wilmer Park. That being said, I'll be better off in my own "studio", seeing to it that all of our guests this special Hallowe'en weekend have a positive experience on our "ship". We are all looking forward to a busy weekend, catering to a happy crowd of visitors and regulars alike. Luckily (well, so far anyway) we are fully staffed, the oven door is repaired, the reach-in door that fell off Saturday night in the middle of service is jury-rigged back together for the moment, rock fish is coming in by the pound, and everyone is hyped up for an energetic and happening weekend at 870 High Street. Oh, man, I hope I haven't jinxed it...
So, what are we planning to do on our weekend, when the "normal" weekend full of wonderful activities is over? Well, on Sunday we are going to an "Oven Warming Party", where an old employee, Mark Bourne, will be celebrating the completion of his Highfield Bread Oven. We've already tasted some of Mark's bread that's come out of the oven, and we look forward to seeing the operation in person. Gotta admit, the Blog name is pretty catchy, eh? After that we are having a BYOL party at my brother John's house to celebrate his birthday. What's "BYOL", you ask? Bring Your Own Laughs? Well, that will surely be part of it...it's Buy Your Own Lobster. We're having a regular old Maine Coast Lobster Feast, featuring some nice big ones that Frank has ordered for us from his buddy in Boston. It's Dutch Treat though, hence the acronym. Monday we will be going to Manhattan for lunch...yes, lunch and only lunch. Kevin's parents reside in Florida for half the year, and after voting in New Jersey on Tuesday they'll be heading south; this will be the last weekend to see them for some months, so a luncheon rendezvous at their new favorite restaurant in New York has been planned. Lunch at Jean-Georges has traditionally been one of the better bargains in pricey New York restaurants, and why we've never been I don't know, but we are certainly looking forward to it now. Sure, it'll be three and a half hours up and three and a half hours back for a two hour lunch, but you know, Kevin's folks, they're worth it...and so is lunch at Jean-Georges!!
And so it seems that October will be going out with a bang and bringing in what we hope to be a bang of a new month. Have fun yourself this weekend, no matter what you do.
