As some of you know, I've been on a campaign to trap the squirrels that are battling the birds in our backyard for the bird seed - I've caught three so far this winter in our HavaHart trap and released them out back of the restaurant. (They say they have to be freed at least 7 miles from their home in order to prevent them from simply making the return trip the next day). The last one I caught, a couple of weeks ago, I forgot to take the trap out of the car when I returned back to work after going home to feed the Dog...I was talking to some customers that night about something, trapping, something, and suddenly I remembered! The squirrel! Was still in the trap in the back of the car!! I went racing outside, and he was very happy to skedaddle across the back of the parking lot in a frenzy of freedom.
This leads me to the (sort of) point of this post - a great article in this week's NYT food section: "Saving a Squirrel by Eating One". I've wondered what squirrel would taste like, since ours are certainly quite plump; after all, they are eating plenty of sunflower seeds, peanuts and black walnuts in our backyard, so the meat should be pretty nicely flavored. If you Google squirrels you will find that the general public either really loves 'em or hates 'em, with not much in between. I got the above pix from a site called "Chicken Crap" - but they could have been taken from our own yard at anytime. Another site, which would be my personal favorite for title anyway, is "All Squirrels Must Die". We've taught Ruby that the word "squirrel" means "Run out the door to the backyard and chase the rodent that's on the bird feeder". She hasn't gotten close to catching one yet, but she sure has put the fear of Dog into them!
Can you tell lunch is a little slow this Saturday?
