What is This?

What this is is a gold mine of chervil. Can you believe this mound of greenery? It is a self-seeded plot, growing on a compost pile, lush and winter proof (apparently) and enough for the entire county. Some will be the garnish on the salmon tonight, and before it bolts this spring we hope to harvest the lot and preserve it as a butter or oil or vinegar for future use.

My cousin Hugh would have been so proud. And we would have made him some bearnaise with it! It is simply glorious stuff.

Oh, and that rusty pipe thing is actually a shovel head that is sort of buried in the soil...don't ask...

Between this and the shad roe we had this week, spring is coming along. Next thing you know there will be asparagus and strawberries!
